ACO Architects reimagines a corner terrace for contemporary family living.
This project, designed by ACO Architects, transformed an old corner terrace house into a contemporary family home. Designed for a young family, the home was envisioned as a calm, secure environment that supports family interaction and entertainment. It also offers quiet respite and connection with the surrounding greenery, creating a nurturing setting for the family.
The design strategically responded to the unique site, which is next to a road reserve abundant with large, mature trees. By utilising views of the surrounding greenery, the design enhances the visual connection between interior and exterior spaces. A two-storey timber screen wraps along the length of the home, framing outward views towards the foliage while forming a protective enclosure for the internal spaces, immersing in the lush greenery.
Existing walls on the first storey were removed to create a fluid layout. Full-height glazing along the length of the house allows the living and dining areas to open up to the surrounding greenery. The timber screen moderates sunlight and privacy for the upper levels, creating a layered facade that provides a treehouse-inspired experience. Timber panelling throughout the interiors further blurs the boundary between inside and outside.
A harmonious home that invites connection with both family and environment.
The project demonstrates how, through responding to site conditions and the sensitive use of material palette, architecture can integrate harmoniously with its surroundings. The thoughtfully designed house offers a playful, nurturing environment for the family to grow in.
